Eye Infections and Red Eyes
Eye Infections
Most eye infections are caused by bacteria and viruses, the latter being the more common cause.
Eye infections can also be caused by fungal and protozoan organisms. Although these are less common, they tend to be more severe, so we always keep them in mind when evaluating a patient with red eyes.
Other than redness, symptoms of eye infections often include one or more of the following: irritation, pain, swelling, light sensitivity, blurred vision, tearing, and mucus/pus discharge.
It is often very difficult to differentiate the cause of an eye infection by symptoms alone. An in-person eye exam is almost always required to be able to observe the microscopic findings on the eye that may be present which help your eye care provider determine the appropriate diagnosis and therefore the appropriate treatment.
Treatment is usually with topical drops and/or oral medication.
Eye Allergies
Many of us living in Georgia are familiar with the red, watery, itchy eyes that accompany the spring and fall allergy seasons.
Perineal allergy sufferers may experience these symptoms year-round.
Perenial allergies are often associated with dust and animal dander. Sometimes allergies can produce dry eye symptoms making the diagnosis more difficult.
Treatment depends on the severity of the allergy. It can range from OTC antihistamines and artificial tears to more potent prescription antihistamines and anti-inflammatory drops.
