Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
AMD is a disease that causes the deterioration of the central retina and the subsequent loss of central vision.
The disease has both a dry and a wet form.
Dry macular degeneration causes the center of the retina to slowly deteriorate. Wet macular degeneration causes abnormal blood vessels to form under the center of the retina.
The wet form is the more aggressive of the two and results in more severe vision loss over a shorter period of time.
There is no treatment for dry macular degeneration, but certain antioxidant vitamins may help prevent dry macular degeneration from converting into wet macular degeneration. Treatment of wet macular degeneration involves injections and lasers.
At Uptown Eye Boutique, we use high-definition digital photography and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to monitor macular degeneration. OCT is an ultrasound type instrument that provides microscopic analysis of the retina and macula. This technology allows us to provide prompt intervention when necessary.
When a patient develops wet macular degeneration, referral to a Retinal Specialist is indicated. At
Uptown Eye Boutique, we work with the most talented and skilled Retinal Specialists in the Metro Atlanta area.
We will always make sure you are well cared for.
